Wind turbine growth to surge amid hunt for reliability
The direct drive wind turbine market is set for rapid growth as wind farm operators seek greater resilience.
New research from Acumen Research and Consulting found the direct drive market reported revenue of $21.91 billion in 2025 and is expected to reach $95.02 billion by 2035, reflecting strong growth at a CAGR of 15.7% during the forecast period from 2026 to 2035.
“The direct drive wind turbine market is experiencing strong growth as wind farm companies and utility operators are increasingly focusing on long-term operational reliability and cost efficiency across wind energy projects,” the research explained. “Unlike conventional geared turbines, direct drive systems eliminate the gearbox, which is one of the most failure-prone components in wind turbines. This significantly reduces mechanical stress, maintenance frequency, and unexpected downtime in the turbine’s lifecycle.
“The direct drive wind turbines help reduce overall costs and improve performance over time. Because these turbines have fewer moving parts, they require less maintenance and experience fewer breakdowns. As a result, operators spend less money on repair and service, increasing the operational hours, and this improving project economics. These factors are critical, especially for large wind farms and remote locations, where maintenance access is difficult and costly.”
The growth of direct drive wind turbine market is further supported by structural expansion within the global wind energy sector itself. Increasing development of large-capacity turbines, particularly in offshore and high-wind onshore locations has created demand for drivetrain technologies capable of handling higher torque and power output with minimal performance loss. Direct drive systems are well suited for these applications due to their simplified design and scalability. Moreover, improvements in power electronics, generator efficiency, and system integration have enhanced overall energy yield, making direct drive turbines more commercially viable than in earlier years.
Direct Drive Wind Turbine Market Statistics:
- The global direct drive wind turbine market is valued at $25.51 Billion in 2026 and is expected to grow at a strong CAGR of over 15.7% from 2026 to 2035.
- Asia Pacific region held around 49% of the global direct drive wind turbine market share in 2025.
- North America accounted for 18% share of the global direct drive wind turbine market and is expected to grow at a CAGR of over 20% from 2026 to 2035.
- By technology, the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) segment represents 78% of the total direct drive wind turbine market share in 2025.
- By Application, the onshore wind turbine segment held 80% market share in 2025.
“A major driver of the direct drive wind turbine market is the rising demand for turbine technologies that offer long-term reliability and reduced lifecycle cost,” The research explained. “Direct drive turbines eliminate the gearbox, which is one of the most failure-prone and maintenance-intensive component in conventional wind turbines. By reducing mechanical complexity, these systems experience fewer breakdowns, low maintenance requirements, fewer breakdowns, and more stable performance over their operating life.
“For wind farm owners and utilities, this results in higher turbine availability, predictable energy output, and improved financial returns, which makes direct drive technology an attractive choice for new installations and repowering projects.”
However, one of the major restraints to faster adoption of direct drive wind turbines is their high initial cost compared to conventional geared systems. The use of large permanent magnet generator, advanced power electronics, and specialised manufactured parts significantly increases the upfront investment.
“High cost of manufacturing and installation can be an adoption barrier in price-sensitive markets and for small developers especially in region where project financing is constrained,” it added. “Although direct drive turbines offer long-term cost benefits, the higher initial expenditure may delay purchasing decision and slow adoption in markets focused primarily on sort-term capital efficiency.”
The study concluded a significant opportunity for direct drive wind turbine market lies in the increasing expansion of offshore and large-capacity wind power projects worldwide.
“Offshore environment demand for reliable turbine systems due to limited access for maintenance and higher operational risks. Direct drive turbines are well suited for these conditions because of their robust design, lower failure rates, and reduced servicing needs. As the industry continues to move toward larger turbine ratings and long-duration projects, direct drive technology is positioned to benefit from increasing investments in offshore wind farms and next-generation high-capacity installations.”
