IKEA insurance move will shake legacy foundations
The news one of the world’s biggest homeware retailers is to enter the insurance market may be the tipping point for a new future of embedded insurance.
IKEA UK has announced customers will be offered home insurance at the point of sale (POS) when purchasing the retailer’s products through its partnership with Urban Jungle.
This partnership marks IKEA’s first collaboration with an insurance provider to further expand their life at home services.
The organisations said the new partnership aims to simplify the process of insuring homes and the things in them, offering easy to understand and accessible insurance powered by Urban Jungle’s digital-first technology.
IKEA customers purchasing furniture or home furnishings will be offered contents and buildings insurance cover in the same transaction – before many of them even thinking about the need for insurance – creating a frictionless and more-streamlined experience.
Jimmy Williams, CEO and co-founder of Urban Jungle, said: “We are delighted to partner with IKEA and this partnership marks a significant milestone in Urban Jungle’s mission. We believe in fair insurance for everyone, and by joining forces with IKEA, we can bring our technology-driven, AI powered accessible home insurance to an even wider audience. We are proud to be the first insurance provider to collaborate with IKEA in the UK, offering insurance that truly puts the customer first”
Callum Leavy, country customer experience manager, IKEA UK, said: “IKEA’s mission is to create a better everyday life for the many people, and that extends to feeling secure and protected in your home. By partnering with Urban Jungle, we are bringing a simple, functional and affordable home insurance product to our customers, ensuring they have peace of mind that their homes and belongings are protected. As part of our wider Life at Home services offer, this partnership helps us support customers beyond home furnishing, making everyday life at home a little easier.”
However, intelligence and productivity platform GlobalData, said the shift toward embedding insurance products alongside other products poses an immediate threat to incumbent insurers stuck using legacy channels.
According to GlobalData’s 2025 UK Insurance Consumer Survey, 30% of consumers said that they would be willing to buy a home insurance policy from IKEA if it were to offer it.
Among all alternative providers, IKEA recorded the highest proportion of respondents stating they would be willing to buy a home insurance policy from the brand. In contrast, Amazon, which launched a similar initiative but discontinued it in 2024, attracted 18.4% of positive responses. Meanwhile, only 15.4% of consumers were familiar with the brand Urban Jungle, signalling the partnership is a massive win for the insurtech.
Beatriz Benito, Lead Insurance Analyst, GlobalData, explained: “The IKEA and Urban Jungle partnership reflects the continued market move toward greater convenience, as more partnerships emerge and the embedded insurance move continues to gain traction.”
Benito continued: “The partnership differs from Amazon’s proposition, in which the online giant offered home insurance as if it were a price comparison website (PCW), requiring manual quote inputs, yet working only with a few underwriters. In contrast, IKEA’s partnership is solely focused on Urban Jungle’s products and is streamlined at the checkout, with no further input required.”
She concluded: “The rise of embedded insurance partnerships poses a continued threat to traditional distribution channels, particularly insurance brokers and PCWs. Both brokers and PCWs act as middlemen between consumers and insurance underwriters, but the embedded model removes the need for this by integrating insurance at the POS with other products, placing insurance directly in the customers’ primary journey. While insurers could potentially arrange their own embedded partnerships, the model will naturally disrupt intermediaries, particularly for less-complex cover.”
