Cyber-attacks continue as Toyota and Aon targeted

Japan’s Toyota Motor Corporation is to re-start domestic production after a cyber-attack on a supplier forced a one day halt to production at domestic factories.

The attack comes just after Japan joined Western allies in clamping down on Russia after it invaded Ukraine, although it was not clear if the attack was at all related.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said his government would investigate the incident and whether Russia was involved.

“It is difficult to say whether this has anything to do with Russia before making thorough checks,” he told reporters.

Kishida has previously announced that Japan would join the United States and other countries in blocking some Russian banks from accessing the SWIFT international payment system. He also said Japan would give Ukraine $100 million in emergency aid.

A spokesperson at the supplier, Kojima Industries Corp, said it appeared to have been the victim of some kind of cyber-attack.

A spokesperson from Toyota described it as a “supplier system failure.”

Some plants operated by Toyota’s affiliates Hino Motors and Daihatsu were included in the shutdown.

The attack on Toyota follows one on Aon, which disclosed that it was hit by a cyber-attack on 25 February, according to an 8-K filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the US.

In its filing, Aon states that it identified a cyber incident impacting a limited number of systems.

In response, Aon said it launched an investigation, and worked with third-party advisors, incident response professionals, and counsel.

Aon said that the cyber-attack has not had a significant impact on its operations.

The broker added that although it’s still in the early stages of assessing the breach, based on current information, Aon “does not expect the incident to have a material impact on its business, operations or financial condition”.
